이하늘은 사회가 규정한 고정관념을 깨고 대상의 이면을 발견하는 작업을 지속해 왔다. 이번 전시 《Big Bang》은 오키나와라는 장소를 통해, 국가나 인종 같은 명확한 경계로 설명할 수 없는 복잡한 인간 존재를 탐구한다.

전시명 ‘Big Bang’은 새로운 질서가 형성되는 순간이자, 변화하고 뒤섞여가는 정체성의 상태를 비유한다. 작가는 역사적 배경과 미군 기지, 다양한 문화가 교차하는 환경 속에서, 서로 다른 배경을 뒤섞으며 자신들만의 삶을 만들어가는 개인들을 목격한다. 오키나와가 마주했던 역사적 충격은 깊은 상처를 남겼지만, 그 상처는 역설적으로 새로운 방식의 삶이 생겨나는 토양이 되었다. 작가는 커다란 충돌이 남긴 잔상, 그리고 그 뒤에 찾아온 거칠고 완강한 삶의 의지를 사진에 담아낸다.

이 작업은 대상들을 특정한 기준으로 묶기보다, 세상이 만들어 놓은 경계를 넘나드는 개인의 역동적인 모습을 가감 없이 포착하는 데 집중한다. 마주하는 인물들의 얼굴과 주변 환경 사이에서 중요한 것은 명확한 정의가 아니라, 그 경계에 존재하는 모호함 그 자체다.

《Big Bang》은 수많은 경계 속에서도 기어이 살아 움직이는 인간의 에너지에 대한 기록이며, 압도적인 힘의 역사 속에서도 자신만의 삶을 조화롭게 구축해 나가는 끈질긴 생명력을 향한 질문이다.

Lee Haneul's exhibition Big Bang takes Okinawa as its medium to explore the complexity of human existence beyond clear-cut boundaries like nation or race. Through an environment where history, U.S. military bases, and diverse cultures intersect, the artist photographs individuals who blend disparate backgrounds into ecosystems of their own—capturing both the afterimages of immense historical collisions and the rough, tenacious vitality that emerged from their fissures. Rather than confining subjects to fixed categories, the work embraces the ambiguity that lives at the boundaries, standing as a record of human energy that persists in living across countless borders and a question toward the resilience with which people build lives of their own within a history shaped by overwhelming forces.
